20.000 Leagues Under the Sea

Reseña

The company has adapted Jules Verne’s classic science fiction novel into a play. At the beginning of the story we learn that sailors have reported seeing a giant sea creature in various parts of the world. The creature looks like a giant whale and authorities believe that it has attacked and destroyed many ships. The government invites Ned Land, a famous whale and shark hunter, Professor Aronnax, a famous writer and Marine Scientist to lead an expedition to hunt and kill the beast. Ned Land, Professor Aronnax and his assistant Conseil board a ship called the ‘Abraham Lincoln’ in New York and start the search. After many days out at sea, they find the giant creature. When the monster goes down into the water, a giant wave hits the Abraham Lincoln and all fall overboard. Professor Aronnax and Conseil swim until Ned Land rescues them. He is on the creature’s back. In fact the creature is a strange ship. Apparently everyone mistook the ship for a sea creature. As the ship begins to go down, our expeditioners open a hatch and get into it. Once inside, they meet Captain Nemo. Captain Nemo is a scientist and her life on this ship is a secret. Enemy forces invaded her country and killed her family. She was devastated and decided to build the ship and escape. The name of the ship is Nautilus and Captain Nemo travels around the world waiting for an opportunity to destroy her enemy. She can’t let our heroes go free. They must stay on the Nautilus.

Our heroes are not happy and decide to plan an escape. This is the beginning of a journey through the world’s oceans and seas, the Arctic and Antarctica, tropical islands and even the lost city of Atlantis.  Ned Land isn’t happy, but Professor Aronnax is not so sure. He wants to escape but at the same time he finds Captain Nemo and this strange trip fascinating. He constantly makes notes for a book he wants to write. After an escape from cannibals, a shark attack while they walk on the ocean floor looking for giant pearls, and later an encounter with giant squids, Captain Nemo finds an enemy ship and destroys it. Our heroes are now determined to escape. Finally as the Nautilus sails close to the coast of Norway in the North Sea, the men get onto a boat to escape. The boat gets caught in a whirlpool but a fishing boat comes to the rescue. As the boat sails towards the shore, they can see the Nautilus in the distance. A light goes on and off several times. Captain Nemo is saying goodbye.
